Eco-friendly permeable pavers for urban water management
Permeable pavements allow rain and stormwater to infiltrate directly into the ground:
- reducing stormwater run-off
- improving water quality, tree health and urban micro-climates.
HydroSTON permeable pavers are porous and free draining – great for tree health and water quality, especially in urban micro-climates. They’re also strong, durable and highly slip resistant, suitable for a range of residential, commercial and industrial applications.
HydroSTON pavers protect micro-climates in urban developments
Developers chose HydroSTON pavers for parking bays in the second phase of the Riverwood North residential renewal development being undertaken by Payce Communities Pty Ltd in partnership with Housing NSW.
80mm thick HydroSTON vehicle pavers (HydroSTON 80) were installed by Sam the Paving Man to a design by Warren Smith & Partners and Turf Design.
Environment
HydroSTON pavers allow water to go back into the soil – great for tree health and water quality
Unsealed surfaces
Progressive councils use HydroSTON to improve water quality in urban micro-climates
Made in Australia
HydroSTON permeable pavers are manufactured in Cowra, NSW and delivered Australia-wide
Landscape design
HydroSTON pavers are strong and slip-resistant – for residential and commercial projects
HydroSTON permeable pavers are suitable for:
- Commercial areas
- Pedestrian areas
- Footpaths
- Driveways
- Parking areas
- Tree surrounds
- Courtyards & plazas
- Lanes & walkways
Custom designed pavers for your project
HydroSTON pavers are available for vehicle and pedestrian applications. While Light Grey and Charcoal are standard colours, HydroSTON can be manufactured to customer preferences in a range of other colours. HydroSTON is manufactured at Cowra in NSW and delivered from the factory directly to customers in Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, as well as regional locations in all States and Territories.
Where to use
- Pavements subject to vehicle loadings – vehicles with a gross mass not exceeding 10 tonnes, with occasional use by heavier vehicles
- Residential driveways
- Carparks, parking bays
- Minor roads and access lanes – up to 150 vehicles per day
- Drainage strips
- Watercourse base flow harvesting
- Tree surrounds subject to vehicle loads
Attributes
- Pavements can be designed for most forms of subgrade, including clay
- High strength and permeability
- Strong edge restraints required
- Laying pattern – herringbone bond
- Generally laid without gap joints
Where not to use
- Steep gradients – infiltration performance decreases with steep gradients during heavy rain events
- Pavements subject to frequent heavy vehicle loading and turning
- Pavement surface less than 600 mm above ground water level
HydroSTON 80 vehicle pavers are specially dimensioned for strength. Widely used for driveways, carparks, parking spaces and laneways.
Colours
Standard colours are Light Grey and Charcoal. Other colours can be manufactured to order during scheduled production runs.
HydroCon endeavours to maintain good stocks of standard colours to meet normal customer requirements.
Non-standard colours can be manufactured to order during scheduled production runs of standard colours.
Early lead time advice is required for the manufacture of non-standard colours and customers need to be consulted on colour selection.
Colours shown are a guide only and may vary. Colour samples are available on request.

Joints
Gap joints are generally not required with HydroSTON 80 pavements, which are used for light vehicle applications. HydroSTON pavers are dimensionally exact.
When HydroSTON 80 vehicle pavements are to be subject to heavy loadings eg semi-trailers, fire engines or garbage trucks, pavers should be laid with 4mm av. joints to ensure lock up of the pavement and provide flexibility of movement of individual pavers under load. Joints should be filled and compacted with 1-3mm low fines crushed rock.

Pavement and substructure design is relatively straightforward for permeable subgrades and where pavements are intended for pedestrian or light vehicle use. Vehicle pavements however need to be designed not only for permeability but also stability. Substructures for non-residential and high traffic applications should be specified by qualified road or pavement engineers.

Experience indicates that periodic maintenance through brushing, vacuuming or blowing plays a significant role in sustaining open pore structure and good infiltration capacities of HydroSTON pavements.
Periodic cleaning assists in keeping surface voids free of sediment, organic matter and other debris, which if compacted will reduce infiltration performance. Since HydroSTON pavers retain the majority of contaminants close to the surface, cleaning can be carried out either manually with a stiff bristle broom or increasing available wet suction cleaning equipment. Large area pavements can be cleaned mechanically with street cleaning vehicles having sweeping and suction functions. Frequency of cleaning will depend on site conditions ie degree of contamination.
Commitment to an inspection and maintenance schedule (see below) should ensure that HydroSTON pavements continue to perform well for many years after installation. Life expectancy is best expressed in terms of infiltration performance, which in turn is dependent on the maintenance regime applied. Cleaning of poorly maintained pavements with industrial wet suction equipment can restore infiltration capacities to close to original capacities. Ability to restore the infiltration capacity of HydroSTON pavements through in-situ cleaning is a positive and distinguishing feature of HydroSTON pavers.
