Behind the visible surface of permeable pavers or infiltration pipes lies a robust body of science. Understanding that science is critical to specifying solutions that deliver performance, durability and sustainability. HydroCon’s products – whether HydroSTON pavers or HydroCon permeable concrete pipes – are founded on engineered permeable concrete technology designed for Australian conditions.
What is permeable concrete technology?
In contrast to conventional concrete (dense, impervious), permeable concrete is designed with an open-void structure allowing water to pass through and into the substructure or through the body of the element. Key features include:
-
Use of no-fines or minimal-fines aggregates to create void spaces.
-
Carefully controlled mix design (aggregate type, binder, compaction) so that load-bearing capacity is not compromised while permeability is maintained.
-
For pipes: a no-fines concrete mix with basalt aggregate, fully porous across entire circumference, allowing exfiltration through pipe walls.
Technology in action: HydroCon’s permeable solutions
-
HydroSTON pavers: Manufactured in NSW since 2007, based on German permeable paving technology. They are “free-draining” with an infiltration rate of 4.5 L/sec/m², and designed for strong structural performance and high slip resistance (P5 rating) even under heavy use.
-
HydroCon permeable concrete pipes: Made using a concrete mixture designed for ~10% voids, enabling storage, detention and infiltration. Laboratory and field studies show heavy-metal and phosphorus removal when used with filter media.
What makes this technology perform
-
Void structure + coarse aggregate: For pavers, no-fines or low-fines aggregate ensure infiltration while still enabling structural strength. For pipes, similar mix design ensures the pipe walls themselves are permeable.
-
Dimensional accuracy: HydroSTON pavers are manufactured to tight tolerances enabling jointless or very minimal-joint installations (which helps maintain infiltration performance).
-
Slip resistance & durability: Especially for pedestrian and heavy traffic applications, HydroSTON 80 pavers carry heavy vehicles including fire trucks.
-
Water-treatment mechanisms: For pipes, the alkaline concrete matrix alters pH, causing heavy metals to precipitate; sediments settle in the low-velocity pipeline environment; combination with filter media enhances pollutant removal.
Why it matters for clients
-
Performance assurance: Proven infiltration rates, load capacity, pollutant removal.
-
Low maintenance & long life: Because systems treat at source and are robust in structure, lifecycle cost is lower.
-
Environmental compliance: These technologies enable infiltration, detention, treatment and reuse rather than “dumping” into waters.
-
Design flexibility: With formats for pedestrian, traffic, vehicle use, and modular pipe systems, these technologies can be specified widely.
Future directions & innovation
As cities densify and climate change impacts intensify, the need for advanced permeable concrete technology increases. HydroCon remains at the forefront, supporting engineers, designers and contractors with design guides, installation and maintenance assistance.
